Gregory (Dub Inc.): "We're a big family"

Reggae hr: You're commonly labeled as „French reggae“, but I dare to say you are more than that, according to the fact that you're all from different places worldwide and a mix of your cultures cannot result just in „French reggae“, right?
Gregory (Dub Inc.): Yes, it's true because we wanted to go further than one type of music or genre. We're all from different origins and places and this mix makes us more rich in our music expression. We want to bring out more from jamaican music. We have two different voices in band from two different areas, and that opens a whole range of sounds in which all of us have an opportunity to flirt with different styles.

Reggae hr: Your album „Afrikya“ was independently released, and you mentioned in one interview that it was very hard to work on it, but also your favourite and best album. Was it the best until now?
Gregory (Dub Inc.): Haha, the new one is my favourite! Because I believe that every new release is better; we work hard on our albums and our label, developing it step by step, choosing the right song and guests for every album. I t's like that for 15 years. We're a big family, we do all together and share everything between each other.

Reggae hr: So you're like some alternative industry.
Gregory (Dub Inc.): Yeah, exactly, you see, we work everything legally; we pay taxes and everything but we respect each other privacy. And if we want to keep like this, we have to keep our quality, loyalty and respect in the band. We create this 15 years ago and we had nothing, we didn't expect a lot, but finally, when we started to earn money, some people around us started to change.

Reggae hr: Are you open for collaborations with young, unknown and independent artists?
Gregory (Dub Inc.): Not really because we're a lot on the road, and when we make an album, we work 24/7 100%. And our free time is dedicated to our families, so we really don't have time for other collaborations. What we try to do is to choose a support band, specially in France, and push some artists by making them play on the big venues. But we don't have time to produce for them. You see, we love being busy, and we live a bit like gypsyes, free, travel all the time, do what we want, ad that's quite egocentric. But after all, when we see so many people happy, we know it was worth to do it.

Reggae hr: Is there any difference between „Paradise“ and your previous albums?
Gregory (Dub Inc.): I think that the songs are better because of the way we write the songs. I think it's maturity, because the lyrics still contain the same subjects. Musically, I think it's easier to listen to us nowadays, and we're also technically way better than like, 10 years ago. We've grown, we still do, and the next album will be better than this one, cause we work really a lot. That's the point in music development, if you love it.

Reggae hr: As I've currently seen the teaser for „Rude boy story“ by Kamir Meridja, and unfortunatelly couldn't find it on torrents, could you tell me and your fans more about it? Who's idea was it?
Gregory (Dub Inc.): It was the movie maker idea, ha said: „You don't have many videos, so I would like to go on the road with you and talk about your work“. At first we were like; „No, we don't want to show much what happens on the road and we don't like too much videos“. But finally we agreed when he said that he wants to show how is it like to work when you're an independent artists. He wanted to make a story about our independence. We accepted that because when we started to make music, no one told us that making music on another way is possible too. Because, when we started, everyone were telling us that we have to get the contract, promotions, bla... And we said; „Fu** it, we're musicians and we want to go on the road!“ We bought an old truck, and we travelled around the cityies, playing music for people in the bars for free, sleeping outdoor... It's true, we were 19 years old and this was our start. It took 15 years to achieve what we have today. Only two members have left, but the rest of us is still the same, and with the whole crew there are 18 of us on the road.

Gregory (Dub Inc.): I want to say to all our fans to keep positive but real. Keep criticize what's happening around us and don't accept corruption, racism, injustice. Our society is unfortunatelly based on fear and distorted values, but we must think of it. We all want peace, love and unity but we cannot reach this values if we don't think about the world we live in!
