AMJ meets RSD - "Heartbeat 12” Vinyl EP

Translated
The preparations were like for a big project or album. Here, three vocals , there, brass section with flute and a cello, violin and viola next to it. A little further away are two guitars, a harp, piano and organ. Except the drums , there are various Latin American percussion, „gaita“, a kind of Spanish bagpipes and South American flute named „quena“. Recording was made at three locations; in Bristol, Pentrychu and distant Havana, and all is mixed by none other than Rob Smith, a famous dub, reggae and dubstep virtuoso, known by the initials RSD.

There is no doubt that the involvement of someone like Rob Smith , who had seven inches "Depth Drop", second consecutive edition, is for AMJ Collective a major step forward. This small, three-member organization is consisting of drummer Andy Clarke, bassist Mark Spence and producer John Hollis, a team directly involved in the realization of this 12 inch release titled "Heartbeat".

All this effort just for a short 12-inch vinyl with a total of only four tracks? Was it for this should go as far as to Cuba and engage all the artists with exotic instruments, and finally set up the entire small philharmonic? And what does this have to do with the modern dub? Or even more, with reggae? It does, if you are a perfectionist and always looking for new sound dimensions, such as the three men from AMJ Collective. Or Rob Smith , who since the eighties writes his story experiments in dub, like when he remixed the album for Dub Syndicate ("Overdubbed" 2007.) , or his aforementioned excursions in dubstep. Although these two vocal arrangements and two dub versions; organic and  "real", Smith's mix and production of John Hollis tracks current postulates, and what distinguishes them from other related issue is that whole fortune of the details. Tapes can gradually build up, where individual instruments fluently join to each other , climbing on the dance rhythms to climax with harmonic resonance. In the title " Heartbeat“, the „airy“ flute  connects with the hymn- like windy instruments, while in "Blue Mountain", after the initial samples in tropical rainforests and dreamy acoustic guitar, appears harmonious strings, playful piano and mystical „quena“ with powerful steppers rhythms and dubstep basses.

As if all that anyway would not be enough for a good record, Smith's typically lucid mix twists everything upside down once again. Guitars and drums are repeated in and resonate in limitless rolling toward the ultimate sonic maelstrom. Although the whole magic lasts about twenty minutes , too short some might say, however, it becomes crystal clear that in dub has a lot to discover and new to try, because AMJ Collective and Rob Smith are demonstrating it in such a magnificent way.
